Fraxel: Your Skin at its Very Best

The Fraxel laser uses fractional skin resurfacing technology, which means that small sections of laser light energy are delivered to the skin. This means no damage to the surrounding area. Fraxel is able to effectively address fine lines and wrinkles; melasma; surface scars and stretch marks; pigmentation from both aging and sun exposure, and actinic keratosis.

Who doesn’t enjoy a little pampering? I had a laser treatment a few months ago. My experience was wonderful from the minute I walked in. All of the ladies were super friendly and welcoming.

The Fraxel Criteria

If you’re in the Bakersfield area and you’re considering skin resurfacing with Fraxel laser treatments, it may be the ideal treatment for your needs. Individuals who make good candidates for this procedure are those who:

  • Want to improve scarring, pigmentation, dull skin, and more
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have not used Roaccutane® or Accutane® in the past six months
  • Are not using antibiotics
  • Are not using retinol, exfoliants, and acids (glycolic or salicylic)
  • Are not prone to keloid formation or scarring

What to Expect with the Fraxel Laser

Ten days before (and ten days after) your Fraxel treatment, you’ll need to stop using any type of skin product that may cause sensitivity. Usually only a topical anesthetic is needed, but sometimes anesthetic injections are required as well.

We will cleanse and numb your skin before treatment. The Fraxel laser will pass over your skin with a rolling motion. Although everyone’s pain threshold is different, the majority of patients find the Fraxel laser very tolerable and report that it feels like a bit of stinging.

Treatments take approximately 20-30 minutes.

The Fraxel laser usually requires about one week of downtime. During the first few days, you may experience sunburn-type side effects, which include redness, swelling, and throbbing. On days 3-5, the skin will begin to peel — but leave it alone. If you peel it, you could cause scarring. Other side effects that are rarer include blisters, infection, acne breakouts, hyperpigmentation, or a herpes flare-up.

During your consultation with us, we will let you know how many treatments you may need. Most people see results after 2-4 sessions, but it varies from patient to patient. In general, optimal results are apparent at 2-3 months, but the skin will continue to improve for up to one year.

Two Wavelengths for Customization

Fraxel can be both non-ablative and ablative. This helps us greatly when we are creating a personalized treatment plan just for you.

Fraxel Repair is our ablative laser. “Ablative” means that it works by removing the outermost layer of skin and heating up the tissue underneath to kick-start brand-new collagen production and skin growth.

The old, damaged skin will peel off over the course of a few days, which reveals smoother, tighter, more refreshed skin underneath.

Fraxel Dual is our non-ablative laser. Instead of removing the upper layer of skin, non-ablative lasers only heat the tissue underneath. New collagen growth is begun, which means that after undergoing multiple treatments, the skin will look clearer, more youthful, and smoother.

What causes wrinkles and fine lines?

Wrinkles and fine lines are the result of several factors, some of which are beyond a person’s control. During aging, skin naturally thins and loses elasticity, which allows lines and creases to form (usually around the eyes, on the forehead, and at the corners of the mouth). Through years of repeated muscle contraction, lines and wrinkles tend to develop in these areas. In addition, certain people may be genetically prone to getting wrinkles. Many people also develop wrinkles and other unwanted skin changes as a result of excessive exposure to harmful substances over a long period of time. Ultraviolet light from the sun or artificial tanning is the leading cause of premature aging; it causes collagen and elastin fibers to break down, resulting in sagging, weakened skin that can more easily develop wrinkles and other signs of aging. Smoking also affects the skin. It can result in early aging by triggering changes in the skin’s blood supply. These factors lead to photoaging, which accounts for up to 90% of premature skin aging.

How can I prevent wrinkles and fine lines from developing?

Although there is no magic way to completely stop the formation of lines and wrinkles, there are many ways to prevent or reduce the effects of photoaging. If avoiding the sun is not possible, it is essential to use sunscreen with an adequate SPF and to always wear a hat and/or protective clothing. Eat a balanced diet, minimize stress, and avoid smoking to help your skin look its best.
